TOPIC: Discrete Element Method for geological (geotechnical) engineering

1. Background of the meeting

    In order to promote the construction of the national young scientific and technological personnel, and enhance the mutual exchanges and cooperation between young scientific and technological workers in the fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering in our country, the Second Youth Forum on Rock Mechanics and Engineering was co-hosted by the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering and the Nanjing University. With the aim of convening and organizing academic conferences for young talents, giving full play to the scientific research energy of young scientists, and creating a new platform for organizing academic conferences and exchanging scientific research results among outstanding young talents of the society, in order to train the comprehensive strength of young talents, to become a national high-level leader in the field of science and technology and discipline leaders to lay a good foundation. The conference will also be held during the "2017-2019 youth talent lifting project start-up meeting" , young scholars are welcome to participate.

    Many problems in geological engineering, geotechnical engineering and energy engineering involve large deformation and failure. The discrete element method (DEM) is an important method to solve these problems. In recent years, with the increasing demand of national construction and Engineering, the rapid development of computer technology and discrete element theory, discrete element method (DEM) is facing great opportunities and challenges in engineering application. The large-scale DEM simulation software MatDEM has been developed by Nanjing University. Based on the GPU Matrix DEM, the multi-million-unit dem simulation is realized, which makes the DEM approach to engineering application. The theme of this forum is: Geological (geotechnical) engineering discrete element method, by the Chinese Association of Science and Technology "young talent lifting project" selected associate Professor Liu Chun (China Society of rock Mechanics and Engineering) as the convenor of the forum. The conference will invite domestic outstanding young scholars Zhang Fengshou, Zhao Gaofeng and Feng Chun to discuss the theory, application fields, research frontiers and progress of DEM. MatDEM will be officially published during the conference and will be used to study and solve geo-engineering and geotechnical problems, including landslides, tunnel excavation, rockburst and pile-soil interaction.
